Gridiron Grudge Match in Boulder
Ahead of the Rocky Mountain Showdown, Colorado State head coach Jay Norvell wasn’t shy about provoking first-year Colorado coach Deion Sanders, suggesting Prime Time’s look wasn’t befitting a man of his age or stature.
Always charismatic and never one to let bulletin board material go to waste, COACH PRIME rallied the attention of his troops just ahead of Saturday, September 16th’s rivalry game with CSU, responding to Norvell’s dig with one simple phrase:
“It’s personal.”
In true PRIME fashion, he then distributed sunglasses to the entire team — his own, actually. Each player received a pair of the Blenders x COACH PRIME ‘PRIME 21 - Gold’ shades.
The sunnies became an instant sensation, donned by Shannon Sharpe, Stephen A. Smith, and Molly Qerim on Friday’s “First Take” and later rocked by the Rock himself on Saturday’s College GameDay, alongside Kirk Herbstreit, Desmond Howard, and Pat McAfee.
But the story of the weekend? It was the resilience of the Buffs in Boulder.
Fourth Quarter Fireworks
Many were expecting a blowout coming into Saturday night. Instead, we all got something better.
Colorado State - Colorado turned into a knock-down, drag-out rivalry fight — and an improbable 4th quarter Colorado comeback that culminated in a 98-yard do-or-die drive led by Shedeur Sanders. That drive was capped by a touchdown and a 2-point conversion to TE Michael Harrison that knotted the game at 28 all.
An OT So Nice, They Did It Twice
Why have one overtime when you can enjoy two?
A series of undisciplined CSU penalties (face mask, late QB hit) placed the Buffs in prime scoring position to kick off the first overtime, resulting in Sanders and Harrison connecting once again, this time for six. The Rams didn’t shrink from the moment, with QB Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi and WR Tory Horton quickly answering to force double OT.
But as it had the whole weekend, this night belonged to Buff Nation.
Sanders found WR Xavier Weaver running free in the endzone, and safety Trevor Woods sealed the thriller with a 4th down interception of Fowler-Nicolosi.
Shedeur Sanders tallied 348 yards, four TDs, and one interception on the night en route to the Buffs’ sixth straight win over the Rams. And of course, not to be outdone, brother Shiloh set the tone with the first-quarter 80-yard pick-six in a game that will go down in the history books.
Colorado State - Colorado drew 9.3M viewers on ESPN, making it the network’s most-watched late-night college football game ever. It was also the network’s most-streamed regular-season college football game of all time.
Colorado Preps for Top Ten Road Test
#19 Colorado (3-0) travels to Eugene to take on PAC-12 foe #10 Oregon (3-0) on Saturday, September 23 at 3:30 p.m. Eastern. The Week 4 match-up represents the Buffaloes’ toughest test to date — a conference clash against a Top 10 opponent.
The kicker? They’ll have to find a way to win on the road in Autzen Stadium without star two-way player, Travis Hunter, who suffered a lacerated liver on a late hit against Colorado State. Hunter is expected to miss a minimum of three to four weeks.
While the odds are against COACH PRIME and the Buffs this weekend, as Deion always says, “You Gotta Believe!” We’ll be watching and, no matter what goes down this Saturday in Eugene, we know Colorado will be doing things in style.
